Contributions from Washington Kayak Club
and Seattle Sea Kayak Club members

Participation in any of these trips requires membership in SSKC or another local club with which we share reciprocal trip scheduling. Members may also bring guests on trips with the leader’s permission.

Protection Island
A slow to moderate pace will be maintained to afford paddlers the opportunity to enjoy viewing birds and other marine wildlife. Protection Island is a NWR refuge and nesting ground for many migratory birds. Depart from Diamond Point on Miller Peninsula and stop at Thompson Spit after circumnavigating Protection Island. Wet suit/dry suit required. Binoculars highly recommended.  12 nm RT.

Great fun in the rocks for the adventurous or bird watching depending on interest.  Possible surf at Crescent Bay.  Maximum 8 people.  Wet or dry suit required.  Helmet required if you want to play among the rocks. 8 Nm round trip

Nisqually River—Yelm power plant to Luhr beach
This trip is packed with variety. Start out on a swift gravel bar river, deep in a canyon and watch the scenery and river conditions gradually change to tidal marches and open water. Length is 12 miles (optional take out at 8 miles). Car shuttle, river skills and wet suit or dry suit required. Date subject to change due to flow level.

This trip requires a car shuttle and early meeting time. Launch from Kingston Ferry terminal and paddle to Suquamish, wait for the max flood to take us through Agate Pass. From here get pushed into Liberty Bay and set sights for Poulsbo. Wet suit/dry suit required. 16 nm trip.

Join us for a long weekend on this rugged San Juan island, with lots of secluded coves and hiking trails available. Launch on Sat morning from Washington Park and cross Rosario Strait on way to James Island.  Camp Sat/Sun nights at the Cascadia Marine trail site on the island and return on Mon afternoon.  Several side trips will be possible: Decatur Island, Blakely Island, Lopez Island, Obstruction Pass.  No signups before May 1.

The Discovery Islands, B.C.
These beautiful islands, at the threshold of a majestic wilderness, offer spectacular vistas, remote beach camps and a solitude that will make each day a journey of discovery.  The trip starts with two B.C. ferries, first to Vancouver Island and then to Quadra Island.  Next paddle a circuitous route through several of the islands in this chain, camping at various spots. This trip also includes several tidal rapid areas, such as Surge Narrows and Hole in the Wall that will be navigated at slack current. After a week of gorgeous scenery, lots of wildlife sightings and exciting paddling, return to Rebecca Spit on July 19 or 20. Limit 6-8 paddlers. No signups before June 1.

On Saturday, paddle Lake Quinault with some pretty stops for lunch and wildlife viewing. Then take a short hike on the trail and go back the cabin at Copalis Beach.   Sunday walk on the beach or optional kayaking on the canals of Ocean Shores or Grays Harbor. (self guided). Room for an additional 6 in the cabin, or tents on the grounds. No fee. Friday night optional.

Washington Park to Friday Harbor via Cattle Pass
Paddle 20+ miles from Washington Park to Friday Harbor in one day.   Enjoy the San Juans on a summer day without taking the ferry there. Take advantage of the currents to ride along Rosario Strait and turn into San Juan Channel. Lunch at south end of Lopez Island. Paddle past Turn Island, ending at Friday Harbor. Wheel back on the ferry for a free ride home.  Wheels and wetsuit/drysuit are required.

Spend two days paddling around Lummi Island in the North Sound.  Second day either paddle around Lummi (about 17 miles) or return on the inside, depending on weather.  This trip requires cold water gear (wet suit or dry suit) and comfort level to include possibility of 15-18 knots of wind.  May be limited to 6 tents due to campsite size.

Anderson Island
Overnight on Anderson Island, launching from either Steilacoom or Nisqually.  Paddle around the island the second day, or venture into the Nisqually Delta for bird/piniped sighting, depending on weather and tides.  Currents and winds can make this a light SK3 trip.  Cold water gear (wet suit or dry suit) needed.  Limited to 6 tents due to campsite size.

Paddle from the outside of Hartstene Island south to Hope Island at the entrance of Hammersley Inlet. Possibility of paddling against 1.5 knot current for part of both days. Stay overnight at this beautiful S. Sound WWTA site, exploring for sand dollars with Nisqually Reach as a backdrop. This trip is intended at a beginner level, short mileage introduction to extended stay kayak touring. Due to the tides that day, the carry up from the water’s edge at low tide on Anderson is a long haul. Limit 8.

Doe Bay
Short overnight trip from Washington Park (near Anacortes) to Doe Island (east side of Orcas). Catch the afternoon flood moving north in Rosario Strait to camp on Doe Island and return with the morning ebb. Optional hot tub and vegetarian restaurant is available in Doe Bay, an easy 12-minute paddle from camp. Distance is a minimum nine miles each way, crossing shipping lanes and strong currents. Average paddler pace will be 3.5 knots. Winds opposed to the strong current could create very rough water so strong bracing skills are a must. Drysuit/ wetsuit and paddle jacket required.

Babbette’s Annual Sun and Surf Frolic at Pacific beach. Sun, sand and surf to enjoy. Potluck feast Sat night. Wine and candlelight. Brown pelicans and wildlife (besides the crazy wave surfers) on the beach. Good for beginner to advanced surfers. Creek to paddle if you don’t want to surf. Spend 4 days paddling beautiful Ross Lake. Start by paddling across Lake Diablo through the Skagit Gorge, spend 3 nights exploring drowned inlets, waterfalls, old growth forest, and perhaps Southern Canada (at least the southern ½ mile). For the first and last day (Diablo Lake) a wet suit or drysuit will be required. The intended paddle pace of this trip is 3 knots minimum.

Halloween Paddle
Meet at 6:30 pm at the ramp on Sunnyside Ave., a few blocks E of Gas Works Park. Wet suit/drysuit and lights for the boat are required. Decorate yourself and your boat as you see fit.

Dungeness Spit
Paddle Cline Spit to Dungeness Lighthouse. Stop for lunch, then return for supper at the Three Crabs restaurant. Dungeness Spit is a National Wildlife Reserve. $3/launch fee per family.

Protection Island, Sequim Bay or Freshwater Bay
After working off some of the Thanksgiving stuffing at Dungeness Spit on Saturday, try soaking in the jacuzzi at the Sequim Aquatic Recreation Center and camping at Sequim Bay State Park. Then on Sunday., circumnavigate Protection Island if the weather is calm, or explore the sandspits at the entrance to Sequim bay if it isn’t.   Paddling 7 to 10 miles.

Christmas Ship Paddle
Meet at the ramp between Golden Gardens and Shilshole Bay Marina. Paddle with the Christmas ship through the locks and back again. Decorations or costumes are optional. Wetsuit/drysuit. Date and exact time TBA.

Christmas Ship Paddle-Kirkland
Ho, Ho, Ho, jolly paddlers needed to accompany the Christmas Ship parade. Lights, antlers and jingle bells are encouraged. Launch in Kirkland and meet the ships for the holiday concert. Dress warmly. Bring lights or glow sticks for your boat. Call for exact date and meeting place.

Frozen Waterfall Paddle
Paddle from Lake Diablo through the canyon to Ross Dam for lunch, and experience 500 foot icicles. Dress warmly. Wet suit/dry suit strongly recommended.
